Varina Banks Howell Davis letters, [manuscript], 1892, 1896, 1898.

1893 Jul 1. To S. S. McClure. Davis writes to express her appreciation for McClure's magazine and her wishes for its continued success. She discusses the immense attention her two notices have received, but laments that they were "murdered" by careless proofreading. She asks McClure to keep her and her daughter [Varina Anne Jefferson Davis] in mind for any future work for the magazine, and thanks him for his sympathy upon the double burial of husband and children for the second time. 1896 Mar 9. To S. S. McClure. Davis discusses her thanks for McClure's response to a request regarding an injustice, her desire for [Ida Minerva] Tarbell to retract a statement herself, her willingness to show Miss Tarbell the proofs in her possession, her delight in McClure's success, and recovering from pneumonia. She also extends an invitation to McClure to visit. 1898 Jul 13. To Miss Gilder. Discusses asking Harper Brothers to send a copy of her daughter Winnie's [Varina Anne Jefferson Davis] "A Romance of Southern Seas" to Miss Gilder for review. She explains that the war caused the book to come out at a bad time and that it continues to keep her "eternally stirred up."
